"Why did you interfere?" she said, face crimson, when she and Lewis again were alone.
"So are you going to do it then?" a male voice said from the threshold behind her.
This was the first time Rose set eyes on a refugee's body.
"Nothing, but I need a dress for a refugee I'm tending to."
Her mother looked up from her work and turned toward the voice.
Blinded by the sun, Rose couldn't see Martha and lifted her arm to shield her eyes.
"I am ill equipped for this," Rose said. "I thought I was able to bear, but I cannot."
"I have become aware that there are things I am woefully ignorant of," Rose said.
